It is with much excitement that we start the new year by announcing a significant award to one of our most respected, well loved, talented and generous Members, David Curry.
David will be bestowed with an Honorary Heritage Golf and Country Club Membership – with all the benefits that come with it – for his service, generosity and commitment to the Club for more than twenty years.
David and his wife, Barbara have been part of the Heritage Golf and Country Club pretty much from day one. David was not only a foundation Member but also, he and Barbara were the first residents. They built their home right along the 8th on the St John course and moved in during early 2000 – almost 22 years ago. Since then, David has been a Member, a keen golfer, a regular on the course and in the Club House. For years, he has played in the comps, a twilight round each week in Summer and often a couple of other games during the week. A rough calculation puts that at well over 3000 games played by David on the Heritage courses. But David’s involvement with the Club goes well beyond games played . . .
David Curry’s Honorary Membership also recognises his involvement and his impact off-course at Heritage. From the beginning, David and his fellow foundation Members were instrumental in forming many of the events that we think of as Club traditions today. David chaired the inaugural Members’ Elected Committee which focused on developing the operations of the Club – and in doing so, he also helped shape the character of The Heritage as a golf club. A good example of this is the impact the committee had on the Club House itself. After a year or so of – let’s call it ‘negotiation’ with management at the time – agreement was reached on completely relocating the small overly formal Members’ Lounge from upstairs to the much larger downstairs space it occupies today. This more relaxed space and the benefits of it opening directly onto the course, was an instant success and much better reflected the Australian approach to a club house.
At the same time, David took on the Chair of the Members Elected Committee. He also took on the newly formed role of Club President serving as President from 2003 to 2007 – the longest stretch of any President to date.
And David’s off-course contributions continue. More recently, David and his son, David researched and published a book on the history of the Heritage Golf and Country Club – which many Members will have read. But for all of David’s contributions to the Heritage Golf and Country Club – and after playing for the most part of his adult life; more than 3000 games, there is still one achievement that eludes him. In the Curry household, there is only one person who has scored a hole-in-one, and that is his wife, Barbara.
The Management team at Heritage congratulates David on this remarkable achievement and we look forward to seeing him on course for many years to come.
Above right – David captured during COVID on his way to The Henley to play his favourite holes.
